Captain America, Bridget Jones, Mufasa, Ne Zha 2 Global Box Office

UPDATED: A handful of titles this weekend are closing in on new benchmarks. They include Marvel/Disney’s Captain America: Brave New World which is nearing $300M global after the sophomore session, and Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King which is expected to hit $700M with Monday, after 10 frames and a day.

And, continuing its record-breaking run, Chinese blockbuster Ne Zha 2 is on the approach to $1.9B in the home market alone, after becoming the highest-grossing animated movie ever worldwide last week.

Meanwhile, overseas audiences are also mad about the girl as Universal/Working Title’s Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (which is out theatrically offshore, contrary to its Peacock play domestically) has topped $70M across its first two weekends. (More detail below.)

Turning back to Cap, the Anthony Mackie/Harrison Ford-starrer dropped 60% in its second international tour (-55% excluding China), and added $35.3M from 52 markets. The overseas running cume is $148.2M for $289.4M worldwide. It’s currently pacing slightly behind Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and The Winter Soldier internationally, and it’s looking like the movie will top out at about $450M worldwide. In Imax, the global cume is $23.3M, of which $10.2M is from overseas.

The Top 5 overall markets to date are the UK ($16.7M), China ($13.5M), Mexico ($10.7M), Korea ($9.1M) and France ($8.9M).

As noted above, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy has surpassed $70M at the international box office. This includes $67.6M from 72 Universal markets which is well above the three previous Bridget Jones films and Ticket to Paradise at the same point, in line with It Ends With Us, and more than double Anyone But You. The running overseas cume rises to about $72M including France where Studiocanal releases (we will update with precise figures).

After the fourquel’s swoon-inducing start last weekend — biggest opening of the franchise in 41 markets/best ever for a romantic comedy in the UK (among others) — the holdover drop was 34% in UPI markets.

The UK is under Bridget’s spell with a total of $34.5M after two frames. Renée Zellweger & Co held No. 1 again, after strong midweeks, with a performance that’s above all comps at the same point including Fifty Shades of Grey. Mad About the Boy has exceeded the UK cumes of Fifty Shades Darker, It Ends With Us, Sex and the City 2 and Fifty Shades Freed.

Mad About the Boy also held the top spot in Australia, Poland and Netherlands this weekend. New markets included Czech Republic where the launch was No. 1 with $600K from 250 screens.

The Top 5 markets to date are: UK ($34.5M), Australia ($6M), Poland ($4.2M), Netherlands ($3.3M) and Spain ($1.9M).

Still to release are Italy and Germany this week, followed by Japan and Korea in April.

Also a big hit in the UK, Studiocanal’s Paddington in Peru has upped its global cume to $150.2M and the international marmalade pot to $125M, including $25.3M from Sony markets. The current frame was $7.7M in 55 total offshore markets.

As for Mufasa, the worldwide cume stands at $698.7M through Sunday including $453.3M from overseas. The 10th weekend added $4.4M from 52 markets with the big cat pawing at $700M global through tomorrow. The Top 5 offshore hubs are France ($43M), UK ($40.3M), Germany ($31.9M), Mexico ($30.9M) and Italy ($23.6M).

And, the phenom that is Ne Zha 2 has upped its China total to an estimated $1.87B according to Maoyan figures. Factoring in estimates for other markets that released across this weekend and last, the global total looks to be about $1.89B. Maoyan has again revised its final prediction for China to RMB 15.1B ($2.08B).

In Imax, NZ2 is now at $131M, which makes it the format’s 9th biggest release ever and its No. 1 animated title.
