Florida Man Spent Days With Dead Wife’s Decomposing Body [Horror IRL]

This true crime story is jarring on so many levels. And it’s still developing, so it’s tough to discern, with any level of certainty, the motive behind the tragic ordeal. According to an affidavit obtained by Law & Crime, we know that Gary Johnson, a 60-year-old Panama City Beach, Florida man left the decomposing body of his spouse, Evamarie Macgregor, on the floor of their home for several days after she passed. During that time, the family dogs chewed off Macgregor’s left foot.

Law enforcement became involved when Johnson called police to report the presence of an intruder in his home. During that 911 call, Johnson also told authorities his wife was on the floor of his home and he believed her to be deceased.

Upon arrival at the residence, police knocked on the door and received no response. Through a window, they observed the corpse of Ms. Macgregor. Her entire left foot had been detached from her body and she was surrounded by blood.

In the wake of that discovery, police personnel forcibly entered the residence. The responding officers described Johnson as “disoriented” and “not lucid.” The man told law enforcement that he believed Ms. Macgregor had expired about four days prior and continued by saying that he hadn’t phoned earlier because he “didn’t want to lose her.”

Johnson explained that he had heard his wife calling for help from the other room, but by the time he reached her, he believed she was deceased. In the days since her passing, he left her remains on the floor, where his two dogs chewed off her left foot.

Following the discovery of Ms. Macgregor’s remains, Johnson was taken into custody at the Bay County jail, where he was held on a $5,000 bond.

The affidavit makes no mention of police discovering an intruder in the home. So, it looks as if Johnson may have been hallucinating or impaired when he made the call to 911. Though the delayed reporting is quite peculiar, he may have been overcome with grief. However, the story is still developing, so no concrete conclusions can be drawn just yet. No further information regarding the investigation is available at this time.
