From a Front Porch to Forever: How “1879” Became the Song That Changed Everything

Some songs are written. Others seem to find their way into the world when the time is right. For songwriter and Ponder the Albatross frontman Josh Bower, “1879” is the latter—a song born from chance encounters, quiet moments, and a life-changing discovery that would ultimately shape his artistic journey.

The story begins on the front porch of a home in the small mountain town of Carbondale, Colorado. Armed with nothing more than a nylon-string guitar, Bower spent evenings making music under the stars. One night, a friend arrived carrying an instrument he had never seen up close before—a mandolin. As the two musicians traded melodies into the Colorado night, something about the instrument left a lasting impression.

Months later, after relocating to Austin, Texas, Bower found himself unable to shake that memory. Determined to explore the sound that had captivated him, he scraped together enough money to purchase the most affordable mandolin he could find. Learning the instrument wasn’t easy. The tightly spaced frets and doubled strings challenged his hands, but as he experimented, a simple melody began to emerge.

“It sounded ancient,” Bower recalls. “Like it had existed long before I found it.”

The feeling inspired two simple words: “In 1879.”

Those words became the foundation of what would grow into one of the most meaningful songs of his career.

On a day when countless distractions could have pulled him elsewhere, Bower made a different choice. Instead of setting the melody aside, he stayed with it, completing the verses in one sitting. The result was a song that felt timeless—one built on vivid imagery, heartfelt storytelling, and a sense of history woven into every note.

It was also the first song Bower had ever written that consistently connected with audiences. Every time he played it, listeners responded, confirming what he already felt: this was something special.

More than just a song, “1879” marked a turning point.

The mandolin didn’t simply introduce a new sound—it transformed Bower’s songwriting and became the spark that eventually led to the formation of Ponder the Albatross. Looking back, “1879” represents the beginning of a journey that would take him from quiet front porches to recording studios, from personal inspiration to a body of work shared with listeners around the world.

Now, years later, the song finds its permanent home on the band’s forthcoming album, Over Hill & Hollow.

“For this song to finally be released into the world feels like everything has come full circle,” says Josh Bower “It’s a reminder of every step along the way, every person who believed in me, and every moment that made this record possible.”

Josh Bower offers heartfelt thanks to Jordan Lauer, whom he calls his “lighthouse” for years of unwavering encouragement, and to River Bower, whose love and support helped complete the journey that began so many years ago.

As Over Hill & Hollow arrives on Friday, October 2, “1879” stands as more than a standout track—it is the origin story of an artist discovering his voice, one mandolin melody at a time. The song serves as a reminder that sometimes the smallest moments—a conversation on a porch, a forgotten instrument, a simple tune—can quietly change the course of a lifetime.
