But Sergio soon discovers that behind the town’s joyful facade lies a disturbing secret: Each week, the villagers gather to hug Matteo (Giulio Feltri), an introverted fifteen-year-old whose embrace can free one of all pain and sorrow. GRUNGE: “Rene Rivas Productions and GRUNGE FILM LLC are delighted to announce the launch of a new proof-of-concept and crowdfunding campaign for their new horror-thriller, ‘Grunge.’ Written by Rene Rivas and Andrew David Smallwood, the feature has grown from a 15-minute proof-of-concept short into an ambitious independent feature film project that was born from the collision of Seattle’s grunge legacy, underground music culture, and psychedelic horror.

The short proof of concept premieres on Crypt TV on October 30, 2026, simultaneously marking the official launch of the feature film’s Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign.

‘Grunge’ is the most recent project from Rene Rivas, whose short films and features have played at numerous film festivals, including Filmquest, Nightmares Film Festival, New York City Horror Film Festival, and more. His most recent short, ‘Rejected,’ was one of a series of short films to be added to Bloody Disgusting and Screambox’s ongoing ‘Bloody Bites’ series, and his new project brings together a collection of talent both in front of and behind the camera for this ambitious new psychedelic horror project!

The ‘Grunge’ proof of concept stars Lestonja Diaz, Sam Quinn, Emma Raimi, David W. Rice, and Matthew Vorce. In addition, Executive Producer David Arond is on board and was a key producer on MTV’s Headbangers Ball and on countless award-winning PBS documentaries. Additionally, the proof of concept and forthcoming feature film maintain a close partnership with Daniel House, a central figure behind C/Z Records. This influential Seattle label released early recordings from artists who would become foundational figures in the grunge movement, including Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Green River, among others. ‘Grunge’ is also receiving support from Sub Pop, the legendary Seattle-based label whose history is inseparable from the emergence of grunge into the international cultural consciousness.
