The latest Demon Slayer movie is killing it in Japan, breaking records for opening day gross, single-day gross, and three- and four-day debuts. As we noted on Sunday, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, the first in a three-film arc, also set an all-time Imax record in Japan.
According to the film’s official X account, admissions across Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Japan were 3,843,613 for box office revenue of 5.52B+ yen ($37.5M). For the four-day (Monday was a local holiday), 5,164,348 moviegoers attended, lifting the running cume through Monday to 7.3B+ yen ($49.6M). This makes Infinity Castle already the No. 2 biggest film of the year in the market.
Per Crunchyroll, Friday’s gross was 1.64B yen ($11.1M) for a Japan box office opening day record. Sunday was the movie’s biggest day of the four-day frame, with 2.03 billion yen ($13.8M), a new single-day record in the market. As we previously wrote, Infinity Castle opened to an all-time Imax record in Japan of $3M. That’s bigger than any Hollywood or local title and includes an Imax opening day Friday record. The four-day total is $3.5M in Imax.
The results for the highly-anticipated anime bested the launch weekend records set by mega-hit Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie: Mugen Train in October 2020 (on a local currency basis). That film grossed 4.623B yen over three days and went on to become the biggest local title ever in Japan with over 40.4B yen. It ultimately exceeded $500M global (at historical rates).
From Aniplex and Ufotable, and released by Aniplex and Toho in Japan, Infinity Castle is directed by Haruo Sotozaki. Last year, Sony and Crunchyroll announced they had acquired the trilogy of movies for global release, excluding select Asian markets and Japan. They will begin releasing Infinity Castle internationally in August with North America joining on September 12.

Tanjiro Kamado – a boy who joined an organization dedicated to hunting down demons called the Demon Slayer Corps after his younger sister Nezuko was turned into a demon.
“While growing stronger and deepening his friendships and bonds with fellow corps members, Tanjiro has battled many demons with his comrades, Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira. Along the way, his journey has led him to fight alongside the Demon Slayer Corps’ highest-ranking swordsmen, the Hashira, including Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku aboard the Mugen Train, Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui within the Entertainment District, as well as Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito and Love Hashira Mitsuri Kanroji at the Swordsmith Village.
As the Demon Slayer Corps members and Hashira engaged in a group strength training program, the Hashira Training, in preparation for the forthcoming battle against the demons, Muzan Kibutsuji appears at the Ubuyashiki Mansion. With the head of the Demon Corps in danger, Tanjiro and the Hashira rush to the headquarters but are plunged into a deep descent to a mysterious space by the hands of Muzan Kibutsuji.
The destination of where Tanjiro and Demon Slayer Corps have fallen is the demons’ stronghold – the Infinity Castle. And so, the battleground is set as the final battle between the Demon Slayer Corps and the demons ignites.
