Season 3 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters would come back with different monsters and a different writers’ room. Apple TV and Legendary Television are in renewal talks, Deadline reported Thursday, and a third season would be rebuilt around new Titans out of Legendary’s Monsterverse.
Chris Black, who created the series with Matt Fraction and ran both seasons as showrunner, would not be back. Deadline reports that a search is underway for a new showrunner and a new writing staff, and Variety reported the same thing that day. Neither outlet names a replacement.
Season 2 Finished Its Run in May
The second season closed on Apple TV on May 1, having moved the story onto Kong’s Skull Island and into a village where a mythical Titan comes out of the sea. Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Joe Tippett and Anders Holm carried it, with Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell splitting Colonel Lee Shaw between two timelines. Casting father and son as the same man at two ages is the best idea this show has had, and nothing about a reset changes that.

Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell executive produce through Safehouse Pictures, with Toho’s Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita also on the credits. Toho’s own Godzilla Minus Zero reaches North American theaters November 6.

Wyatt Russell Already Has His Own Monarch Show
The spin-off is further along than the renewal is. Legendary and Apple TV have an untitled series built around a young Lee Shaw, with Russell reprising the role, Harold as showrunner and JD Dillard directing. The official description puts Shaw behind enemy lines on a secret mission in 1984, and the cast includes Millie Brady, Pilou Asbæk, Corey Stoll, Ralph Ineson, Nyasha Hatendi, Connie Nielsen and Stana Katic. It sits inside a multi-series deal between the two companies, which is how a show still in renewal talks already has a sibling set up.
