Sir Patrick Stewart died at 86 years old on October 28. The legendary actor, known for Star TrekandX-Men, was dealing with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia at the time of his death.
Stewart’s death was announced on social media on October 29. “He has been held in the warm embrace of family and friends, surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, laughter and the kind of profound emotion that only he could inspire after a lifetime of devotion to us all,” the statement read.
Stewart’s family includes his wife, Sunny Ozell, and his children from a past marriage. Keep reading for all of the details about the actor’s relationships and kids.
Who was Patrick Stewart’s wife?
Stewart is survived by his wife, 47-year-old singer-songwriter Sunny Ozell, whom he met in 2008. They first crossed paths at a restaurant in New York City, where Ozell was a waitress. They married in September 2013. Stewart’s longtime X-Men costar, Ian McKellen, officiated the ceremony.
The actor recalled meeting his wife during a 2022 interview with People. “This lovely woman came over and said, ‘Gentleman, on the house, what would you like for desserts?’ We got talking and she told me how much she’d wanted to see Macbeth, but it had been sold out. The Brooklyn run, which was only three or four weeks, sold out before we opened.”
He continued, “And I said, ‘Well, we’re going to Broadway next.’ It was the only time in my life I’ve given someone my telephone number and said, ‘Call me, I can get a ticket.’ And that’s what we did. And she came backstage afterward and we had dinner and here we are.”

Since then, Ozell has released two albums, 2015’s Take It with Me and 2020’s Overnight Lows. “I’ve never met anyone like her before,” Stewart said of his wife. “She is so smart and so informed. And her intellectual accomplishments are extraordinary. She remembers everything.”
Prior to his relationship with Ozell, Stewart was married to TV and film producer Wendy Neuss from 2000 until their 2003 divorce. Stewart was first married to actress and choreographer Sheila Falconer from 1966 to 1990. The actor was candid in his memoir, Making It So: A Memoir, that his affair with Jennifer Hetrick, who played Vash in Star Trek: The Next Generation, caused problems in his marriage to Falconer.

Stewart and Falconer welcomed two children, Daniel and Sophie, during their relationship. Daniel and Sophie are Stewart’s only children, born in 1967 and 1972. Daniel has followed in his dad’s footsteps as an actor, even appearing alongside Stewart in projects like 1993’s Death Train and Star Trek: The Next Generation.
“I think it’s a great thing that we’re both in the same profession. It has brought so much into both our lives that we can share and enjoy talking about. It’s terrific,” Stewart told USA Today in 2015.
Daniel is married to fellow actor Mary Stillwaggon Stewart. Since they wed in 1999, they’ve welcolmed a daughter and a son. Sophie, who leads a more private life compared to her brother, also has a son and a daughter.
In 2023, Stewart opened up about his complicated relationship with his children. He told Irish Independent that he was “separated” from them. “I never thought that this would happen, but both my children are in their 50s – they’re not children anymore, they’re adults. And my relationship with them is practically non-existent,” he said, before noting, “I always put my acting work first, before my family.”
