Sheriff In Nancy Guthrie Case Knows Motive, Says Others At Risk

Nancy Guthrie has been missing since February. The mother of Today Show host Savannah Guthrie was last seen on Saturday, January 31. She was reported missing the next day. The initial investigation suggested a kidnapping after blood was found outside. The case has since gone cold with very little progress in finding who has Nancy Guthrie and where.

However, the sheriff in charge of the case shared a shocking update. Sheriff Chris Nanos said he knows the motive for the alleged kidnapping. Furthermore, he warned that others might be at risk. Keep reading for the latest on the case that has the nation transfixed.

    Motive In Nancy Guthrie’s Abduction

Savannah Guthrie hasn’t been on the NBC talk show since her mother went missing. She’s spent a lot of time in Tucson, Arizona, waiting for word on her mother’s whereabouts. Some fans wonder if she’ll ever return to the morning news program.

The alleged kidnappers reportedly made ransom demands, though at least one demand was deemed fake. Savannah Guthrie is offering a $1 million reward for any information that leads to her mother’s return. Even with the FBI assisting in the investigation, very little progress has been made in the case, at least publicly.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has led the investigation and shared updates with the press. In his latest update, he shared new information about the suspect and their motive. “We believe we know why [the kidnapper] did this and we believe that it was targeted, but we’re not 100% sure of that,” he told NBC News.

The sheriff declined to say more about the motive, but said he’s known the motive since the beginning. “I think day one, we had some strong beliefs about what happened and those beliefs haven’t diminished.”

“I’m not going to get into those theories. We have our beliefs. Everybody else has theirs,” he added.

    Sheriff Says Others At Risk

If the attack was targeted, that means there’s no danger, right? Not according to the sheriff. He said there’s “absolutely” a chance the suspect could strike again.

“It’d be silly to tell people, ‘Don’t worry about it. You’re not his target.’ You could be. Don’t think for a minute that because it happened to the Guthrie family, you’re safe. No. Keep your wits about you,” he warned.

The Today Show tightened security at the New York City studio shortly after the disappearance.

What Social Media Sleuths Think Happened

What happened to Nancy Guthrie remains a mystery. Her family is holding onto hope that she might still be alive. With little news from the authorities, social media users are left to speculate and share their own theories.

    • “They expected to ransom her and she died on day 1-2, so they dumped the body and gave up on the plan.”
    • “Ive heard a conspiracy theory that she’s not alive and was taken across the border by a cartel.”
    • “I wondered if someone obsessed with Savannah could have done this.”
    • “It’s gotta be someone within the family.”

Anyone with information about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance is asked to please contact 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.
