A 2023 sci-fi film starring the Tenet star will be added to Hulu’s streaming platform soon. It was written and helmed by the director of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
The Creator arrives on Hulu next month
The Creator will begin streaming on Hulu starting Saturday, June 20, 2026, per the streamer’s schedule.
Gareth Edwards wrote and directed the film. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Weitz. This marked the second time the two collaborated, having previously worked on Rogue One in 2016.
Before the narrative jumps forward, The Creator takes place in 2055, when most of the humans are at war with artificial intelligence following a nuclear explosion. While the Western world aims to eradicate AI, New Asia has learned to integrate it into their daily lives. Meanwhile, the US military looks to hunt down Nirmata, the creator of New Asia’s technology.
More than a decade after the explosion, the US military hires Joshua, an ex-soldier who is struggling with the disappearance of his wife, to destroy Nirmata’s new weapon. During the mission, he discovers that the weapon is not a machine, but a childlike AI named Alphie. This revelation leads Joshua to challenge his own beliefs.
The Creator’s cast features Tenet’s John David Washington as Joshua, Madeleine Yuna Voyles as Alphie, Gemma Chan as Maya, Allison Janney as Howell, Ken Watanabe as Harun, Ralph Ineson as Andrews, and Sturgill Simpson as Drew, among others.
20th Century Studios distributed the film and released it in September 2023. While the film’s stunning visuals and lore received unanimous praise, the story and pacing garnered criticism. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently has a critics’ approval rating of 67% with a user rating of 75%. On IMDb, the film holds a user score of 6.7/10 based on nearly 200K votes.
Reportedly, the film cost the studio $80 million to make and grossed roughly $104.2 million globally. It also received two Oscar nominations: one for Best Visual Effects and another for Best Sound.
