Theater counts: Caught Stealing robs Freakier Friday from fourth straight widest release

Heading into its third weekend, two-time box office champ Weapons ceded the spotlight to a surprise contender: Netflix’s animated musical KPop Demon Hunters. The two-night event film made an unexpected splash, pulling in an estimated $19 million across roughly 1,700 locations. While Weapons aims to reclaim the top spot, it’ll have to battle through a trio of new challengers to return to the winner’s circle.

Opening wide this weekend is the gritty ‘90s-set crime thriller Caught Stealing. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the film centers on a burned-out former baseball player who’s unexpectedly thrust into a brutal fight for survival in the criminal underbelly of 1990s New York City. The ensemble cast is stacked, featuring Liev Schreiber, Carol Kane, Bad Bunny, Zoë Kravitz, and more. Caught Stealing debuts in 3,578 theaters nationwide.

Returning to theaters for its 50th anniversary is Jaws, widely regarded as the original summer blockbuster. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the iconic thriller is celebrated for its haunting score, unforgettable moments, and classic lines like “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.” While it spawned three less-celebrated sequels, the original remains a cultural touchstone, having reeled in $484 million since its debut. Jaws resurfaces this weekend in a strong 3,200 theaters nationwide.

Opening in 2,700 theaters this weekend is the dark comedy The Roses, inspired by Warren Adler’s 1981 cult novel The War of the Roses. Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman star as Theo and Ivy, a couple who appear to have it all, until cracks begin to show. As Theo’s career crumbles and Ivy’s ambitions soar, their seemingly perfect life spirals into a bitter and biting battle of egos, resentment, and ruthless one-upmanship.

Oozing into 1,995 theaters this weekend is The Toxic Avenger Unrated, a comedy-horror reboot starring Peter Dinklage. The film follows a downtrodden janitor who’s dumped into a vat of toxic waste by a corrupt chemical company and lives to tell the tale. Armed with his mop, and now superhuman strength, the unlikely hero battles corporate overlords and corrupt forces who threaten his son, friends, and community.

Rounding out the top five this weekend is former three-time theater-count-chart-topper Freakier Friday, which enters its fourth weekend after shedding 200 locations, now playing in 3,475 theaters. Holding steady in third place is Weapons, still widely available with a presence in 3,416 cinemas. Meanwhile, The Bad Guys 2 continues its run in fifth place, showing in 3,015 locations nationwide.

Looking ahead to next weekend, a wave of new wide releases is set to hit theaters, including the long-awaited theatrical debut of Hamilton, which is expected to open in approximately 1,600 locations. Also making its way to the big screen is the latest installment in The Conjuring franchise with the release of The Conjuring: Last Rites. That movie will open in approximately 3,500 locations.
