Theater counts: Lilo and Stitch remains widest release as it ventures into its second weekend

It was an outstanding Memorial Day weekend at the domestic box office, with the newcomers racking up nearly $220 million in combined earnings for their 3-day opening and $260 million for their 4-day opening volley. Led by Lilo & Stitch’s $146 million haul and Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning’s $64 million contribution for the 3-day weekend, it was an exciting one for moviegoers of all ages. The competition will be fierce this weekend as two new wide releases will attempt to make their way to the winner’s circle, searching for a box office win.

New to theaters this weekend is Karate Kid: Legends. The film follows a Beijing-born kung fu prodigy who moves to New York and trains under Mr. Han and Daniel LaRusso. Beginning its run in 3,809 theaters, the movie is the latest in the Karate Kid franchise, which spans back to 1984 and comprises six films, with global earnings of nearly $625 million. Legends is directed by Jonathan Entwistle and stars Karate Kid veterans Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan, while bringing on board Ben Wang as the newest prodigy to train under the martial arts experts.

Also opening in wide release this weekend is the newest film from A24 with the debut of the supernatural horror feature Bring Her Back. The movie follows a brother and sister who uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother. Making its way into 2,409 movie houses, the film is directed by Australian duo Danny and Michael Philippou, whose only other filmmaking venture was 2023’s supernatural horror film Talk to Me, which went on to post worldwide earnings of over $91 million.

Worthy of mentioning is IFC Film’s release of Tornado in 412 cinemas. The film follows a traveling puppet samurai show in Britain in 1790 that crosses paths with ruthless criminals, but one of the performers, Tornado, hatches a plan to play them at their own game. Mitsuki Kimura (professionally known as Kōki) stars as the titular character.

Rounding out the top five this weekend is the aforementioned box office leader, with Lilo & Stitch showing no signs of slowing down, holding on to its opening week count of 4,410 theaters. Adding four locations entering its second weekend is Final Reckoning, chiming in with 3,861 venues. Occupying the fourth place spot is another former number one, with Final Destination: Bloodlines, dropping 389 locations this weekend for a total of 3,134 cinemas. Lastly, still playing in a wide 2,520 theaters is Thunderbolts*, looking to add to its $176 million North American earnings.

Looking ahead to next weekend, we see four new wide releases and a wide expansion arrive in theaters. The Phoenician Scheme is set to expand into approximately 1,500 locations after opening in six theaters this weekend. Expected to arrive in roughly 3,200 is the latest in the John Wick franchise with the release of From the World of John Wick: Ballerina.
