Theater counts: Minecraft three-peats as widest release

It was another big weekend for the number one film in the land, as A Minecraft Movie tallied up over $78 million in its second go-around, taking its 10-day total to $278.86M, easily leading the way over the second-and-third place finishers, newcomers The King of Kings and The Amateur, finishing out their opening weekend with $19.4 million and $14.8 million respectively. This weekend will be a much tighter race for Minecraft, however, as studio sibling Sinners makes its way into theaters.

Set in the Deep South during the 1930s, Sinners follows troubled twin brothers who return to their hometown for a new start, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back. Starting out in 3,308 movie houses, the film includes a well stocked lead ensemble cast led by Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as brothers Smoke and Stack. The film’s director, Ryan Coogler, has previously helmed such heavy hitters as Creed, Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. With both Minecraft and Sinners playing in a large number of theaters, the combo should easily put Warner Bros. in the driver’s seat at the weekend box office.

Also opening in wide release this weekend is the animated sports comedy Sneaks. Making its start in 1,430 locations, the movie follows a pair of rare, collector sneakers named Ty and Maxine, who find themselves separated from one another. Desperate to find his sister, Ty meets and enlists JB, a streetwise New York sneaker, to help find her. The film stars Anthony Mackie as the voice of Ty, with Martin Lawrence lending his voice for the part of JB.

Making its return to the big screen this weekend is the historical drama Pride & Prejudice. The film starring Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFadyen scored over $38 million in its original North American run starting in November 2005. The 20th anniversary release will be available in 1,393 venues.

Debuting in 1,142 theaters this weekend is the Andrew Ahn directed romantic comedy, The Wedding Banquet. The film is based on the 1993 movie of the same name directed by Ang Lee.

Also arriving in wide release is the anime feature COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing. The musical drama is based on the Sega rhythm game Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage!. It was released on January 17 in Japan and debuted at number two in its local territory with earnings of just over $4 million in its opening weekend.

Rounding out the top five widest releases this weekend is the reigning box office leader, with A Minecraft Movie leading the way with 4,032 locations, while currently enjoying a 13-day domestic total of $296.8 million. Second-place finisher at the box office, The King of Kings, is also the second-largest release, adding 335 theaters in its second attempt, coming in this weekend with 3,535 cinemas. Holding with its opening weekend count of 3,400 venues is The Amateur, and lastly, A24’s Warfare adds four theaters this week for a total of 2,674 as it also heads into its second weekend.

Looking ahead to next weekend, we once again see two new wide releases making their theatrical debuts. Ben Affleck’s The Accountant 2 is expected to arrive in approximately 3,200 locations while horror flick Until Dawn is projected to make its start in approximately 3,000 domestic theaters.
