Updated: Marvel Studios/Disney’s Thunderbolts* has reached $272.2M worldwide in its sophomore session. The current international box office cume is $143.7M after this frame added $34M overseas. The latter reps a 52% drop (-50% excluding China). The New Avengers continue to reap great social scores and are on their way to $300M global by the end of the week. The ragtag ensemble was the top studio title in most offshore markets this weekend.
Before we dive into more detail on Thunderbolts* second go-round, let’s dig into some new milestones for Warner Bros/Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie. The Jack Black/Jason Momoa-starrer topped the nine-century mark globally in its sixth weekend with $909.6M through Sunday. It also passed half a billion internationally, now at $500.6M. More detail below.
Turning back to Thunderbolts*, it was the top MPA picture in most of Europe. Across Asia, it was No. 1 for the studios save in Japan, and in Latin America it held the No. 1 slot for a studio movie except for Mexico (where Sony’s Karate Kid: Legends was No. 1 in its early opening) and Peru.
The antihero pic from director Jake Schreier is already the No. 2 studio title of the year in Hong Kong, Indonesia, India and Thailand.
Some of the strongest holds this weekend include in Ukraine (-21%), Poland (-24%), Denmark (-26%), Sweden (-28%), Spain (-31%), France (-31%), Australia (-34%), Germany (-37%) and Hong Kong (-37%).
When looking at just the FSS weekend (given last frame included the May 1 holiday in many markets), a 44% dip (excluding China) is stronger than Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (-52%), Captain America: Brave New World (-54%) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (-54%).
The Top 5 markets to date are: UK ($15.5M), China ($13.8M), Mexico ($11.2M), France ($7.2M) and Australia ($6.4M).
The global Imax cume is $29M, including $15M from overseas.
As for Minecraft, this weekend added $12.5M in 78 offshore markets, helping push the Chicken Jockey across a bunch of new records. It’s now the biggest WB movie ever in Poland, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Lebanon and Turkey. Globally, Minecraft has exceeded such other WB titles as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, The Chamber of Secrets, and The Prisoner of Azkaban, as well as Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Inception, the first Fantastic Beasts movie and The Crimes of Grindelwald, and Dune: Part Two.
The Top 5 to date are: UK ($71.2M), Germany ($37M), Australia ($34.2M), Mexico ($32M) and China ($28.4M).
As for Warner Bros and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, the Michael B. Jordan-starrer sunk its teeth into another $6.6M from 70 offshore markets, repping a solid 40% dip. Strong holds were seen in UAE (-16%), France (-24%), Australia (-26%), Spain (-29%), Saudi Arabia (-31%), Holland (-35%), Germany (-42%), UK (-41%), and Italy (-47%).
The overseas cume to date is $68.9M for $283.3M global through Sunday; it will cross $300M global, largely powered by domestic.
In like-for-like international markets at today’s rates, the film is tracking 119% over Speak No Evil, 90% higher than Nope, 61% ahead of Get Out, 39% bigger than Us and 33% above Creed.
The Top 5 are UK ($17.4M), France ($8.1M), Australia ($5.5M), Mexico ($3.9M) and Germany ($3.1M).
Getting out early in Latin America — ahead of much wider release later this month — Sony’s Karate Kid: Legends kicked off with $5.7M from 12 markets in the region. That’s higher than recent nostalgic action/adventure revisits like Sony’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (+32%), as well as Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (+24%) at current exchange rates.
Powered by strong critical and audience reactions, Mexico took the No. 1 spot with $3M.Other notable openings include Brazil ($860K), Peru ($415K) and Argentina ($320K).
The next major market releases include the UK (May 28) and Germany (May 29). Domestic goes May 30, and international play continues in a staggered pattern through the summer.
