In a new AI-generated clip posted on Truth Social, the president walks up to a sign identifying Lake Ontario, knocks it down with his foot, installs a replacement bearing his preferred name, and then breaks into his familiar dance.

The Saturday video appeared on Trump’s Truth Social account, turning the naming dispute into a cartoonish political spectacle. The replacement sign reads “Welcome to Lake America” and carries an American flag. The clip followed another AI post that showed geese wearing Trump-style blond wigs and firing rifles along the shoreline (via The Daily Beast).
The online theatrics sit against a much more serious disagreement. Trump issued an executive order seeking to rename the Great Lake, which stretches between the United States and Canada. The move has arrived alongside a worsening trade fight, with tariffs on Canadian products and retaliatory measures threatening to raise costs for American shoppers and companies that depend on Canadian components.
Canada has pushed back hard. Prime Minister Mark Carney said on X (formerly Twitter) that Canadians know the lake by its established name and will continue calling it Lake Ontario. Ontario Premier Doug Ford also unveiled a bilingual shoreline sign declaring, “Lake Ontario Now and Always.” Ford argued that the name existed long before Trump entered politics and will remain after his presidency.
The dispute also reaches far beyond modern borders. Indigenous peoples gave the lake its name more than four centuries ago. Carney explained that “Ontario” originates from the Wendat word Ontari’io, referring to the lake as beautiful and large. He noted that the name predates both Canadian Confederation and American independence.
Indigenous leaders have separately criticized Trump’s order as an attack on cultural history and cited treaty concerns involving the Great Lakes. “The President cannot assert ownership over our culture or erase it through irresponsible political action,” J. Conrad Seneca explained.
