EXCLUSIVE: Hulu is developing Just One Day, a series starring Kathryn Newton (The Devil’s Mouth, Big Little Lies) based on the Gayle Forman YA romance novels.
Patrick Moran executive produces the project, which was originally set up at Amazon under his company PKM Productions’ first-look deal there, with Beauty & the Beast co-creators Sherri Cooper and Jennifer Levin writing the adaptation. That iteration ultimately did not move forward; the concept is now undergoing redevelopment at Hulu with the same writers.
Cooper, Levin, Forman and Anna Mastro also executive produce. 20th Television is the studio, marking a homecoming for Moran who once ran its predecessor ABC Studios.
The Just One Day series spans two books and a followup novella. It centers on Allyson Healey (Newton) whose life is exactly like her suitcase — packed, planned, ordered. Then on the last day of her three-week post-graduation European tour, she meets Willem. A free-spirited, roving actor, Willem is everything she’s not, and when he invites her to abandon her plans and come to Paris with him, Allyson says yes. This uncharacteristic decision leads to a day of risk and romance, liberation and intimacy: 24 hours that will transform Allyson’s life.
The first novel, Just One Day, released in August 2013, tells the story from Allyson’s point of view, while Just One Year, published in September 2014, is told from Willem’s POV. The books has been sold into 19 territories and sold almost 1 million copies.
YA remains a priority area for Hulu, which continues to develop projects after recently passing on two pilots, including Foster Dade.
Newton already is in business with Hulu and 20th TV: she is in their pilot Durango. She currently stars in the Prime Video movie The Devil’s Mouth and recently starred in Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come. Newton is known for playing Paul Rudd’s daughter Casse Lang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. a role she is reprising in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. In TV, she was part of the main casts of Big Little Lies and The Society. Newton, whose upcoming movies also include White Elephant, Somo Lives and Hot Year, is repped by WME, Entertainment 360 and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman.
Veteran TV writer-producers Cooper and Levin, who co-created and executive produced the CW’s Beauty and the Beast and worked on Brothers & Sisters, Felicity and Everwood, among other series, are repped by Verve, Mosaic, and McKuin Frankel Whitehead.
Moran executive produces the USA Network series The Rainmaker and has Genuine Fraud, starring The Summer I Turned Pretty‘s Rain Spencer, and Rich AF, in development at Amazon.
The film & TV rights for Forman are repped by Katherine Curtis of New Leaf Literary & Media.
