Madison Beer Reveals Men Discussed Her Sex Appeal As a Minor

Once hailed as a teen prodigy, Madison Beer recently opened up about the sad reality of establishing her career while adult men discussed her sex appeal. The singer confronted the uncomfortable truth of being sexualized as a minor. In a recent interview, Beer confessed how grown men in the music industry openly discussed her sex appeal. Moreover, facing this at age 14 left her with a broken sense of self.

Madison Beer recalls being dropped from the label for being ‘too sexy’

In a candid interview with Cosmopolitan, Madison Beer talked about her career, recounting how industry gatekeepers discussed her sex appeal. She revealed how they branded her as “too sexy” for mainstream success. The 26-year-old artist recalled, “There was a conversation around me when I was 14, I remember people being like, ‘She’s too sexy’ and ‘We can’t sell the sex because she’s so young, so we’d have to wait.’”

She added, “Literally the same day my manager dropped me, my lawyer dropped me, and my label dropped me.” Detailing the deeply personal and immediate aftermath, Beer recalled, “Everything in my life went away within 12 hours. I was 16 and my label was like, ‘Good luck.’ And I’m like, ‘You guys just stole years of my childhood that I’ll never get back.’”

While she counted on people meant to nurture her talent, Beer found herself being misunderstood, mismanaged, and objectified by them. Though she had an immense social media following and endorsements from stars like Justin Bieber, the media reduced her to a mere image. Her teenage experience led her to denounce the industry’s obsession with appearance. Furthermore, she explained, “What we’re told from so young is ‘Be pretty, be hot.’ Society just continues to perpetuate this. It’s terrible.”

With Madison Beer’s third studio album on the horizon, she is ready to move past an identity that reduced her talent to her sex appeal and flourish in her career. Additionally, her interview clarified that the singer was preparing to chart her own course. She was less interested in industry approval and more focused on committing to her career.
