The Today Show tightened its studio security after an intruder rushed toward co-anchor Craig Melvin during a live broadcast last week. Producers quickly introduced new guest rules as they worked to prevent another frightening incident inside NBC’s Studio 1A.
The policy took effect immediately. It also changed how guests and their teams entered the studio.

According to Variety, the show emailed Hollywood publicists with updated instructions for every future appearance. The message announced stricter studio access rules and limited the number of people who could accompany each guest.
The email explained the decision in clear terms. “In light of the recent events last week, we are implementing stricter security protocols effective immediately,” producers wrote. The message continued, “There will be a maximum of two (2) people in the studio per guest.” The policy also stated that “no exceptions or additional personnel” would receive studio access during interviews.
Producers encouraged publicists to keep guest teams as small as possible. They also allowed additional staff members to wait in the green room instead of entering the studio. The email asked representatives to contact the production team before arrival if they expected any scheduling concerns.
The changes followed a security breach on July 16. A man bypassed security at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, entered an unauthorized area, and lunged toward Melvin while shouting a racist slur. According to the outlet, law enforcement sources said the intruder had searched for longtime weather anchor Al Roker before confronting Melvin instead.
Melvin addressed viewers during the following morning’s broadcast. “You may have heard that unfortunately an intruder made his way into an unauthorized area here at Studio 1A,” he said. He added, “Thankfully, he was apprehended quickly. He was placed under arrest. We are cooperating fully with the NYPD as they investigate the matter. And we are just very happy that everyone is safe.”
