Morning show host Kelly Ripa proposed having an “airport divorce” with husband Mark Consuelos in a tiff on-air about the rising trend. The couple argued with one another on a LIVE with Kelly and Mark segment on Wednesday, October 22, on whether this would help them cope with the stress of traveling together. An airport divorce is a strategy for couples to avoid conflict by separating from each other at the airport (or arriving separately) and only meeting again at the gate. And after a lengthy argument about it on air, the 55-year-old host said she was “definitely getting” one.
Ripa and Consuelos bicker on air over different traveling habits
In the segment Ripa suggested that she and Consuelos have an airport divorce due to their “differing traveling styles.”
In particular she said that her husband needs to arrive “4 to 16 hours before a flight takes off,” something that Consuelos believes is an exaggeration. He replied that he likes being only an hour and half early before a flight is scheduled to leave.
Ripa then said Consuelos doesn’t like to be bothered by fans when he’s at an airport gate, which is yet another thing he denies, saying “Don’t put that out there. I’m very nice to people. That’s not cool.” Consuelos didn’t appreciate his wife “trying to throw me under the bus.”
After that, Ripa continued the spat, recalling an incident when she joined her husband in solidarity on the regular security line because his TSA PreCheck had lapsed. But they started to fight when they had to choose which line to join, one on the left or one on the right, and she became irritated that she had to take off her shoes and take out the items in her bag when her husband was annoyed with her. “I am being violated in this line,” she said, “and Mark is still irritated with me!”
Fed up with the argument, Ripa joked, “The airport divorce is what we are definitely getting.”
In a September episode, Ripa hilariously didn’t understand what the “raw-dogging” trend meant.
