    Rogue

I love an animals run amok flick. The genre rose to prominence a full 50 years ago with the breakout hit Jaws, which we now regard as the first summer blockbuster. The subsequent success of films like Alligator, Lake Placid, The Shallows, and Crawl proves that the premise has plenty of staying power, that effectively rendered killer animal pictures have the same potential to terrify viewers today as Jaws did way back in 1975.

Films of this ilk delight and terrify in equal measure by pitting man versus nature, often weaponizing idyllic locations we largely consider safe spaces, like the beach. This technique allows us to confront primal fears in a safe and constructive space–no wonder these films continue to resonate.

If you are one of the many movie lovers for whom animals run amok films resonate, we’ve got exceptionally good news. An underrated and supremely effective killer creature picture is now streaming on Tubi! The movie of which I so cryptically speak is none other than Greg McLean’s (Wolf Creek) killer croc flick, Rogue.

McLean takes a cue from Jaws and features the killer croc sparingly. For much of the film, we only see glimpses of the creature, building intrigue and suspense in the process. As most fans will tell you, what we don’t see is often far more terrifying than what we do.

Rogue lacks the widespread reverence of some of its peers thanks to a lackluster theatrical exhibition, but it’s a true diamond in the rough. Fans who have seen it will tell you that the flick is intense and atmospheric, featuring impressive effects work and a strong cast.

Speaking of fans, scope the below social media reactions to get a better idea of what it is that people appreciate about this under-seen effort.

Rogue (2007): A group of tourists on a boat tour on an Australian river are attacked by a huge crocodile. They try to survive after their boat is sunk. Not particularly original but very well made, and only glimpses of the crocodile keep it menacing. Good cast too. Decent film. pic.twitter.com/X9KPkASS3x

Right, just finished watching “Rogue” (2007). That giant croc was properly terrifying! Definitely makes you think twice about a dip in the Northern Territory. Worth a watch for the suspense. #Rogue #AussieFilm #CreatureFeature

    #FilmX #creatures Great Creature Features, 9/20.
Rogue, 2007. Boat tourists in the Northern Territories, Australia, are caught at the end of a tidal river with a large and hungry crocodile. I’ve never seen a better or more intense film about a crocodile. Excellent. pic.twitter.com/fqoyWYzOTR

In case you need some added context on the particulars, behold the plot crunch from IMDb: An American journalist (Michael Vartan) on assignment in the Australian outback encounters a man-eating crocodile while trapped on a rapidly flooding mud island.

Now that you know that Rogue is a sorely underrated effort currently available to stream on Tubi, your next step is to take the flick in and see what you make of it. We’re hedging our bets that you’re going to have a great time. Either way, make sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
